Taught from the application backwards
People who use it, not only teach it.
When a student asks where any of this is actually used, the answer comes from last week rather than from a textbook. Motivation problems in maths and physics are usually relevance problems — and relevance is the one thing a working professional doesn’t have to fake.
Specification first, always.
Industry experience is worth nothing to your child if the tutor doesn’t know how marks are awarded. Every tutor knows their board and their spec in detail, and teaches to it — not to the version they sat.
VETTING — No one teaches on Beyond121 without being assessed by me personally, on the subject and on the specification. Being good at the job is not the same as being good at teaching it.
Help that outlasts the lesson.
A Year 9 choosing GCSE options. A Year 11 picking A-levels. A Year 13 weighing a degree against an apprenticeship. These decisions get made on guesswork far more often than anyone admits.
Our tutors took those routes and now work at the end of them, so when the question comes up mid-session it gets a real answer — not a careers leaflet.
What we teach
Pick a level to see the subjects, the year groups and the boards we work to.
The years GCSE quietly assumes. Most GCSE problems start here — an algebra gap in Year 8 doesn’t announce itself until Year 10, by which point it looks like a topic problem instead.
Our busiest level. Taught to the board your child actually sits, with past-paper work from the first month rather than saved for study leave.
Same level as GCSE, different specification and a different exam style. We teach to the one your school entered your child for, not a near-enough version of it.
The Scottish route, taught to SQA. The content overlaps GCSE closely; the assessment does not — and it’s the assessment that decides the grade.
The step up from GCSE is larger than most families expect, and a grade 7 is not the safety margin it looks like. This is also where questions about degrees, apprenticeships and what engineering actually involves start arriving mid-session.
Higher and Advanced Higher, taught to SQA. One year rather than two, which makes pace the thing that decides the grade — so diagnosis in week one matters more here than anywhere else.
Both maths routes, SL and HL. Internal assessments count, and they’re marked on criteria most students never read properly — so we work on those alongside the papers.
Coursework-led, and almost nobody tutors it. Assignments are graded Pass / Merit / Distinction against criteria — knowing exactly what a Distinction requires is most of the work, and it’s what an engineer can actually show you.
